✵ Materials You’ll Need

Yarn Recommendations

Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) yarn is ideal—easy to work with and great for beginners.
Fiber: Go for organic cotton or wool for softness, durability, and crisp stitch definition.
Colours: Use two complementary shades per square for contrast and texture.

Inspiration combos:
🌿 Forest green & cream
❄️ Smoky grey & pale blue
🌼 Yellow & muted lavender

Using two colours really makes your stitches shine!

Yarns to Avoid
Skip slippery yarns like silk blends or super thin lace-weight cotton—they can be tricky to control and might cause frustration. Go for something soft, smooth, and easy to work with.

🧶 Yarn & Hook Tips for This Pattern

Recommended Yarn
Try Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Yarn in a light color. It’s beginner-friendly, doesn’t split easily, and the stitches show up clearly—perfect for practice. Plus, it holds up well wash after wash.

Best Hook to Use
Start with a G-6 (4mm) hook for worsted weight yarn. Metal or plastic hooks work great for beginners—they help the yarn glide smoothly.

If you're looking for a full set, the Yarniss Crochet Hook Set on Amazon is a great choice. It includes 14 sizes (2mm–10mm), has comfy rubber grips, and smooth aluminum tips to help keep your tension just right.

What is filet crochet?

In filet crochet, an open square is made by working a double crochet, then chaining 1, skipping the next stitch, and working another double crochet into the following stitch. This creates a small open space, or “window,” that forms the mesh pattern filet crochet is known for.

Foundation:

Chain 31.

Want to adjust the size? Just start with a multiple of 3, then add 1 extra chain for turning. This lets you easily make your project wider or narrower to suit your style.

Row 1:

Work one double crochet (dc) in the 4th chain from the hook, *chain 1, skip 1 chain, dc in the next chain*

Repeat from * to * across the row.

You should end with a dc in the last chain.

End with 1 dc in the final stitch.

Turn your work.

Row 2

Chain 4 (counts as 1 dc + ch 1),

*Skip 1 stitch, dc into the dc from the previous row, ch 1*

Repeat from * to * across the row.

End with a dc in the top of the turning chain from the previous row.

Turn your work..

Rows 3–15 (or to desired height)

  • Repeat Row 2 until square measures approximately 20 cm (about 15 rows).

  • Feel free to stop sooner or go longer for a smaller or larger square..

To Finish:

  1. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail.

  2. Pull the tail through the last loop on your hook to secure.

  3. Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.

  4. Block your finished square to smooth out the edges.

Tips for Success with This Crochet Pattern

▶Keep Your Tension Consistent: Maintaining even tension throughout helps your open and closed squares look uniform and keeps the blanket flat—not wavy or puckered.

▶Count Your Stitches Often: Filet crochet relies on precise stitch counts to form the mesh and pattern correctly, so count your chains and double crochets regularly to avoid mistakes.
