Crochet Blanket Project Part 14: Easy Double Crochet Square
This post may contain affiliate links.
This week, we’re keeping it super simple. 🧶
We’ll stick to just the double crochet stitch—and work it in the back loop only. This technique creates a beautiful, textured ridge that pairs perfectly with the more intricate squares we’ve already covered.
By focusing on back‑loop single crochets, you’ll:
Build Consistency – perfect your tension without juggling multiple stitch types.
Add Dimension – that subtle ridge gives your blanket a professional, sculpted look.
Work Mindfully – get into a calming crochet rhythm that’s perfect for unwinding.
Ready to sharpen your skills and add a fresh texture to your project? Let’s jump into this week’s square!

✵ Materials You’ll Need
Yarn Recommendations
Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) yarn is ideal—easy to work with and great for beginners.
Fiber: Go for organic cotton or wool for softness, durability, and crisp stitch definition.
Colours: Use two complementary shades per square for contrast and texture.
Inspiration combos:
🌿 Forest green & cream
❄️ Smoky grey & pale blue
🌼 Yellow & muted lavender
Using two colours really makes your stitches shine!
Yarns to Avoid
Skip slippery yarns like silk blends or super thin lace-weight cotton—they can be tricky to control and might cause frustration. Go for something soft, smooth, and easy to work with.

🧶 Yarn & Hook Tips for This Pattern
Recommended Yarn
Try Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Yarn in a light color. It’s beginner-friendly, doesn’t split easily, and the stitches show up clearly—perfect for practice. Plus, it holds up well wash after wash.
Best Hook to Use
Start with a G-6 (4mm) hook for worsted weight yarn. Metal or plastic hooks work great for beginners—they help the yarn glide smoothly.
If you're looking for a full set, the Yarniss Crochet Hook Set on Amazon is a great choice. It includes 14 sizes (2mm–10mm), has comfy rubber grips, and smooth aluminum tips to help keep your tension just right.

How to do a back loop only double crochet
Foundation:
Chain 30 + 2.

Row 1:
Work 1 dc in the 3rd chain from hook.
Work 1 dc in each chain across.
Turn your work.
Row 2
Ch 2
1 dc BLO (back loop only) in the first stitch.
1 dc BLO in each stitch across.
Turn.
Rows 3–15 (or to desired height)
Repeat Row 2 until square measures approximately 20 cm (about 15 rows).
Feel free to stop sooner or go longer for a smaller or larger square..
To Finish:
Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail.
Pull the tail through the last loop on your hook to secure.
Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.
Block your finished square to smooth out the edges.
3 Tips for Success with This Crochet Pattern
▶ Maintain Consistent Tension
Practice keeping the same stitch tension throughout—neither too tight nor too loose. Before starting your full square, make a quick 10–15 stitch swatch to check that your gauge feels even.
▶Count and Check Regularly
After each row, count your stitches (you should always have the same stitches in every row). Stopping occasionally to verify your stitch count prevents surprises later and keeps your edges straight.
✨ Stay Hooked, Keep Building
You’ve laid the foundation and nailed the basics—now it’s time to turn those rows into momentum.
Keep these points in mind as you work:
Focus on Consistency: A steady rhythm beats perfection. A few even stitches each day will take you farther than a frantic marathon session.
Celebrate Small Wins: Finished five rows? Nailed your tension this round? That’s progress. Acknowledge it, then move on to the next goal.
Experiment and Learn: Toss in a colour change, try a new border, or tweak your hook size. Every tweak teaches you more about your craft.
Before you know it, those 15 rows will become 30, then 60—and that simple square will grow into a stunning blanket. You’ve got the skills, the tools, and the plan. Now go on, pick up your hook, and keep building—one dependable stitch at a time. 🧶✨
