How to Crochet With T-Shirt Yarn for the First Time

Beautiful homes aren't built overnight—they're created one handmade piece at a time.

If you're wondering how to crochet with t-shirt yarn, you're in the right place. T-shirt yarn is one of the best materials for beginners because it's chunky, easy to work with and perfect for practical home décor like baskets, plant pot covers and vase covers.

I love crocheting with t-shirt yarn because the pieces you make become part of your everyday life. A handmade basket for blankets or a plant pot cover on a sunny windowsill can completely change how a room feels.

In this guide, you'll learn what t-shirt yarn is, why it's so beginner-friendly and the best projects to make for a beautiful, handmade home.

What Is T-Shirt Yarn?

T-shirt yarn (sometimes called tarn) is made from strips of jersey fabric instead of traditional spun fibres.

You can cut it from old t-shirts or buy ready-made yarn in a wide range of colours.

Unlike wool or cotton, it's thick, slightly stretchy and holds its shape beautifully. That's exactly why it's perfect for home décor projects.

The chunky texture creates baskets, storage and accessories that feel modern, relaxed and beautifully handmade.

If you're just getting started, I recommend using a good-quality fabric yarn with an even thickness. It makes learning easier and gives your finished projects a much more polished look.

My favourite fabric yarns:

Why T-Shirt Yarn Is Perfect for Crochet Beginners

One of the biggest reasons I recommend t-shirt yarn is because it builds confidence quickly.

The stitches are large, so projects grow surprisingly fast. Instead of spending weeks making something you'll eventually tuck away, you can finish a useful piece in a weekend and immediately find a place for it in your home.

The thick texture is also wonderfully forgiving. Small changes in tension disappear into the fabric, so your first project can still look beautiful even if every stitch isn't identical.

Crochet suddenly feels less about getting everything perfect and more about creating something you'll genuinely enjoy seeing every day.

Choosing the Right Crochet Hook

This is where many beginners think they need lots of specialist equipment.

You really don't.

Most t-shirt yarn works beautifully with a crochet hook between 8mm and 12mm, depending on the thickness of the yarn.

I personally love using wooden or resin hooks because they glide more comfortably through fabric yarn than metal hooks, making longer crochet sessions much more enjoyable.

Remember, the goal isn't finding the "perfect" hook. It's choosing one that helps you comfortably create pieces you'll be proud to display in your home.

The Best Beginner Crochet Projects for a Beautiful Home

Rather than starting with a huge project, choose something small enough to finish.

Some of my favourite beginner projects include:

These projects don't just teach you crochet—they become pieces you use every day.

If you've been to one of my crochet basket workshops, you'll know I have baskets everywhere in my home. They're one of the simplest ways to make a room feel calmer and more organised while adding warmth and texture at the same time.

That's why baskets are still my favourite project to teach.

A Few Things I Wish I'd Known

There are a few things that make working with t-shirt yarn much easier.

Your stitches will naturally be a little looser than when using traditional yarn, and that's completely normal.

The fabric needs room to move.

Give yourself a little extra space while you work too. Fabric yarn is wonderfully chunky, but it does take up more room than a standard ball of yarn.

Most importantly, don't aim for perfection.

Aim to finish.

One handmade basket sitting proudly in your living room will teach you more than three unfinished projects hidden away in a cupboard.

Every finished piece makes your home feel a little more personal—and reminds you that you made it yourself.

Create a Home Filled With Handmade Pieces

You don't need years of crochet experience to make pieces that look stylish, practical and completely at home in your space.

You simply need to begin.

If baskets are the projects you're most excited about, I'd love to help you go further inside Crochet Basket Studio. You'll learn how to create beautifully structured baskets you'll actually use, with step-by-step guidance, sizing tips and support whenever you need it.

Because creating a beautiful home isn't about filling it with more things.

It's about filling it with pieces that tell your story.
